In the month of October we had many celebrations that gave us the opportunity to connect as a community and as a village. It was beautiful to see the collaboration of our parents working together. Through our different committees, we all worked together to prepare for Grandparents & Special People Day and Halloween. We also came together with the Outreach Committee and began collecting donations for Feeding South Florida to benefit those affected by Hurricane Michael. We thank all of our families who have donated to this cause as we continue receiving donations every day. It is only with the help of invested parents that we can grow and strengthen our community, and I am so thankful for the parents we have as part of our group. Our school doors are always open to you, and you are always welcomed and encouraged to participate.
La Piazza represented our school at the BKB Fair this month. Meeting with other schools in our community was a great experience, and it makes us feel proud to be pioneers in progressive education, where we value our children’s socioemotional development. We want our children to excel in all areas – emotional, interpersonal, academic, creative and social. We strive as a school to give our children and families the tools to accomplish all this, and more.
In the spirit of community, we will celebrate our first Community Day on November 9th and we will have our annual Thanksgiving Feast for the children on Tuesday, November 20th. At the end of the month, on November 28th and 29th, we will have our Scholastic Book Fair.
As always, I welcome you to engage in these activities and make even more connections to fellow parents. It is beautiful to see us come together, grow and depend on each other as members of a village and a family.
Wishing you a beautiful fall season.

Grandparents & Special People Day
We welcomed Grandparents & Special People on Friday, October 12th to join the children for a classroom experience and a lovely brunch. The children created special gifts for their guests. We would like to thank all of the grandparents and special people who came together to make this an amazing experience.
We welcome parent participation. This month, we held our first meetings with the Cooking Committee, Decorating Committee, Outreach Committee and Fundraising Committee. Volunteers discussed specifics of each committee, how committees enhance the school, and began to collaborate on their first projects which included outreach for Hurricane Michael, the Halloween Bake Sale, and our Halloween Festival.
Halloween Bake Sale
This year’s Halloween Festival was a huge success. Children enjoyed the experiences created by our room parents, which included sensory stations, a pumpkin decorating station, a slime making activity, a Day of the Dead activity! Our Pumpkin Patch was also a big hit. Many thanks to our families for coming together and making this a very special Halloween for our children!
La Piazza Foundation
We would like to extend a sincere Thank You to everyone who has donated and supported La Piazza Foundation so far – your contributions are helping to make our vision a reality.
La Piazza Academy has created the La Piazza Foundation, a section 501(c)(3) public charity, with the purpose of serving children in my hometown of Manizales, Colombia. In Manizales, our contributions will make a big impact by educating a great number of children. Growing up in Manizales, I witnessed extreme poverty. Many children in this area grow up in tragic circumstances and lack access to basic needs. For these children, the opportunity to go to school is the only glimmer of hope in their otherwise bleak day.
My goal is to create a dignified, stable environment for these children to spend their childhood. My hope is that they can grow to be productive citizens, and in turn, help their own community.
Regardless of the circumstances a child is born into, all children deserve the same opportunities. By contributing to La Piazza Foundation, you are helping to impact the daily life of a child just like yours.
Please view the below video to learn more about the children we will be helping.

Helping Your Child When They Won’t Tell You What Is Wrong
Empathy is an immediate way to comfort a child. When a child feels empathy they feel understood. A child that believes their parent understands them feels connected to their parent and is willing to share how they feel. Empathy is a parent’s most important tool.
The Emotionally Healthy Child
“Happiness is a skill, emotional balance is a skill, compassion and altruism are skills, and like any skill they need to be developed. That’s what education is about.” Read more here.
